I live in Jefferson Parish (Metairie). I want to put up a new 6 foot privacy fence in my backyard. Neighbors on all sides, already talked to all of them, got the ok. Do I need a permit to get this done? Thanks.

Technically, yes you do. Even though you approval from all neighbors, it only takes one person in the area that may have a different feeling to report it. Personally, I think its pointless but to keep yourself from a fine and something possibly worse, can't hurt to just get the approval and be done with it.

For what its worth, i built my fence (i also live in metairie) with neighbor approval and didn't want a permit but let people talk me into getting one. I'm sort of glad i did now because one of those said neighbors has become a bit of an issue since lately and i'm glad i have proof that i'm clear with the parish.

Yes--exactly this. Also, you never know when you're gonna get new neighbors, who may not be as amenable as the existing ones.

It's not required, you can also go 8' high in Jefferson Parish. As long as the fence is on your property, how can anyone have a problem with it.

I’d check the Jefferson building code. I just redid mine in Orleans Parish and I think the rule here is that to build brand new, you need a permit. But repairing an existing fence doesn’t require it. We were able to reuse most of the posts but everything else (rails and pickets) were new so it qualified as a repair and no permit needed.

I don't understand "permits" needed to build a fence.

I do understand (unfortunately) about how HOAs can control them, esp. when it comes to type of fence, etc.
But, why would there be a city ordinance?

When you get a permit, do they verify the property lines when they go up? The people that lived in our neighbors house before them put up a fence that encroaches on our side.

Get it. You have to get your property's most recent survey (mine was circa 1970s) at the appropriate JP office (i think Yenni bldg in Elmwood). $1 or something cheap like that.
Then take it to the permit office where you sit down and explain on the survey where its going.

Depending on where its going, you may want to do 811 and get your markings to avoid data and gas lines.

I got popped for $300 bc some random neighbor(not an immediate one affected in any way) noticed I didnt have a permit slip on my window. And then the inspector noticed something else i had to modify.

Some people are angry losers.
The time and $37 are worth it.

If you have no idea what you are talking about (which you don't) then don't post. OP, get the permit, the headaches that can arise from not having one are much greater than the headache of getting one.

Yes, you or your contractor are provided the property line information with what the parish has on file. If they are encroaching and you feel like it will impact your new fence, You can either approach the neighbor about the issue and deal with it that way or call the code enforcement office and have them come deal with it. Just be prepared for the fallout if that pisses off your neighbor.
