My wife is at her mother’s in New Orleans and trying to use the cook top and the igniter won’t turn off. Any suggestions besides cleaning, killed the power, can just manually light it until repair guy can visit. cooktop is installed post Katrina so it’s not a fancy computerized one. Prob Maytag Ge American brand. Any help appreciated.

Get some rubbing alcohol and wipe down each igniter. Also make sure all knobs are centered and dry beneath the knob in the switch mechanism. You may have to remove the top to further investigate.
I have been through this many times.

Did they just clean it? Mine would do that if water got in it from cleaning, turn off the breaker and let it dry for a few hours and turn back on
Guess if you need it sooner you could hit the igniter with a hair dryer for a few minutes?

One of my burners had a short in the ignitor wire just under/inside the stainless. I could see it arcing in the dark space, I guess heat ate up that part of the wire insulation. I very annoyingly taped it a lot where it was doing that, worked again. I think you are saying your problem is different though.

Check to see the burner cap(s) aren't misaligned too...

I came across one the other day that the plastic switch was just out of place so that the switch was just staying in light. Usually this and most issies with stick ignition are stuck ignition rheostats and you repair by buying a new switch assembly.

Sorry for late reply, but it might help next time. For a quick workaround look in cabinet under cooktop and unplug it from the wall. The downside is that you'll then have to light the gas burners with a match or sparker.
A real fix isn't hard, just time consuming. Lift the stove top out of the countertop enough to access the disassembly screws. You might have to disconnect the gas line... be sure it's off. In my GE stovetop each gas valve has a simple igniter switch. Replacing one is simple once you have opened the stovetop.
Check the price of new stovetops. That may inspire you to fix it.
