About a year ago my gas lantern on the front of my house kept going out and I would have to climb up there to either re-light it or turn the gas off. I thought there was too much wind coming in so I sealed around the edges to help prevent too much air/wind coming through. Now it's still not staying lit. Does anyone have experience with this?

Sounds like you eliminated one of the 3 elements (oxygen) necessary for combustion by sealing it off.

How was your gas flow prior to sealing it off?

Yes that's what I figured as well.

The gas flow was decent, but would go out with strong winds.

Flow shouldn’t be affected by wind.

I guess its more so of the flame going out due to high wind, unless you are saying that shouldn't be the case either.

Get a fine wire brush and scrub the tip of the fitting. Probably has poor gas flow

This is a big cause of issues, ash/deposit build up around the nozzle. That and dead bugs clogging up the wire mesh screens in the bottom of the housing. You can also get different tips to change the shape of the flame, might be a more wind resistant design available.

LINK

Mine used to do the same thing. Went to the place I bought them from and he sold me a wind guard made for this reason. It is a piece of round copper tube that slides down over the gas tube where the flame comes out and prevents the wind from blowing the flame out. I have never had the flame go out since. I will see if I can find an example.

Edited to post link above. It is called a wind guard. The 2nd picture shows how it sits on the flame.

A lot of good responses, now I just need to get the sealant out of the joints.
