24000 BTU Heat Pump

I'm going to run both grid and solar supply lines to this, but hoping that i can cool low enough that I can run ceiling fans at night without needing run time on the grid. I'll document the install here.

I don’t know anything about this, what’s the story the solar is supposed to be able to run it by itself?

I’m curious how close a middle class person could build a house basically off the grid these days? Something like this with a reasonable amount more of solar, some propane, well water, etc. Seems like if you gave us a couple smaller luxuries, used less lighting, and were smart about your consumption you could do this now reasonably?

I know a rich person could, I just mean reasonably.

I could do it but it’s not practical and requires too much upkeep and monitoring. But it’s certainly doable I don’t just feel like fricking with it

batteries are the biggest issue. The panels are cheap and so are the inverters/etc. otherwise I could run everything else on propane

I don't intend to go off grid. Just keeping my options open. Main system is a bit oversized at 4 ton. (2,700' with the space split evenly between 10 and 12' ceilings.) This system will run all the time at a setup temperature I've yet to decide on. What's cool about this unit is you bring the solar strings directly to it and it will run entirely on that, assuming good sunlight. If you also land the grid wires to their respective connection, then in the instance it is cloudy and needs to run but not having enough to cover the electrical requirements, it will prioritize the solar, and then draw the difference from the grid.

Yes, this would make a heck of an add on to a hunting cabin. They make 3 sizes, 9k, 12k and 24k BTU. In heat mode, I thought i'd read somewhere where they could extract heat down to 14°. Non mini split variable drive heat pumps don't do quite that well but they do better in lower temps than traditional HP's.

As far as batteries/ other panels and inverter/charge controllers are concerned, I just want a minimal setup, like 10 or 15kw backup with 5000-7500 watts of panels. Once you have an inverter/charge controller with batteries, you can keep the system charged from a diminutive generator. I intend to visit that place later next week.

The panels will be going over my cattle pens. Shade.

Are you in Texas? That sounds like a 6 ton house around here.

We had it foamed in march. 10" against the roof, 5 1/4" in ext walls.

The chart below shows what a 10k window shaker did over several days in the great room. You can see temp drop the day I turned it on and 4 days later turned it off. The Bosch inverter heat pump has a lot of flexibility. I'll start running it on the low speed setting on the fan and run it up higher if I think it is lagging. (not likely with the mini split doing it's thing)

So, if I am reading right. It stays between 85 and 90 degrees in your house? If so, you are more of a man than I am!

Whooops, I left out that this is an ongoing build. We were in San Antonio during the hot day/night cycles. We shut the unit down when we are gone. We’ve been side tracked for over 3 months. We lost my dad in late April and my wife’s mom passed 3 weeks ago. Hopefully we can get some progress going again.

Is there a way to monitor solar vs grind usage?

Keep us updated on install and performance.

The manual shows that you can see real time solar and grid input usage.

It has a counter in the app that shows cumulative watt hours saved.... this is just counting how much solar the unit has used.

It also has an AC limiter that can be set from 0 to 600 watts.

Someone should come up with a window unit size that can do this. Take a power outage and the average person could run a window unit with this and a small generator for 2-3 hours a day and be pretty comfortable.

I measured up the inside and outside so that the pipes came down parallel to a rib while still being between studs.

I’ve temporarily taped all the lines and electrical to the outdoor unit and am having a custom bent tin trim piece to match the r panel to hide them in.

That should read I taped up the lines and electrical going to the unit, not taped to the unit lol. I took my readings about 30 minutes into the run after startup yesterday and the thing tops out at 6 A total 240 V. This morning, the great room was at 73° and the rest of the house was at 76 to 78°. I will take readings again tomorrow morning as last night was the whole house acclimating and I have a lot of mass in my interior 2 x 6 walls. I haven’t been able to get the app to sync with the unit on the house Wi-Fi and will be calling them to work out the kinks there. I don’t have the solar panels tied in yet, and that might be several weeks as I intend to build a framework that I’m going to suspend them on my cattle pens.

Correction. The unit is drawing 11 amps full load this afternoon. I really need that app working.

So you are hoping to cool it low enough in the evening to only run ceiling fans? That just doesn't seem possible. You are in texas? What's your overnight lows? If you are in an arid area that gets cooler at night I could potentially see that I suppose.
