Scared the heck out of me too. Sounded like someone fired a gun right by my ear Fortunately, my apron caught it and didn't pierce my gut.

Anywho, need a new hand sander as there is a recall on this model Ryobi and they will ship another one to me in "10 business days" once I send the bad one back.

What brand do you baws recommend? TIA

Dang. Had no idea that was something I needed to be concerned about when using a sander. That's crazy.

I use a newer model ryobi random orbit sander and I'm reconsidering that now. I think it was like $40. If you want quality that will last forever, go Makita.

It'll run you $100 instead of 40-50, but it won't break and they are superior quality. My mom's whole shop is Makita tools, they are the real deal.

I ended up getting a Dewalt which so far is pretty good. Was a bit pricier than the Ryobi's but HD didn't have the Ryobi's in stock

Also, update to my blown up Ryobi:
After looking around the web to see if anyone else experienced a blown out motor in their sander, there has been a recall on it. Spoke with Ryobi last Friday and they will ship out a new one today "once there is evidence I sent it back" Yes, that really happened.

If anyone doesn’t want to sink a lot of money into a random orbital, the Black & Decker BDERO100 gets great reviews and is only $30.

I usually steer away from B&D, but I purchased this one because of price and reviews and I’ve been happy with it and hasn’t blown up on me yet.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a similar B&D one that the motor went out on. Not sure of the model but it's rectangular in shape.

I spent $20 on the little black and decker mouse sander that looks like an iron to sand some cabinets. Its a little small for sanding larger stuff, but for getting in cracks and crevices on something like cabinets it works great.

Luckily you didn’t get hurt.

Dewalt for me. Has been a great tool.

I’ve got a dewalt I bought about 3 years ago after having a Craftsman professional for over a decade.

Get the DeWalt RO sander from Home Depot. We used to use a bunch of them daily in a production fab shop, and I have one personally. They're legit

Next time you're in the market for a RO or belt sander, go look at BigSkyTool website for the refurb Hitachi stuff. I got a 5" RO for under $25 and it's every bit as good as my Dewalt sander. I picked up the 3x21 belt sander for $70 too, they have the same model in Grade C for $50 right now.

I sanded the exterior of my house (3,000 sq ft/all cedar) with the B&D orbital from Lowe’s for $30. I figured if it died, I could just buy another one. If that one died, I could just buy another one.

Anyway, the first one is still kickin’. I’ve spent more on sandpaper than I did for the sander.
