We finally got around to building new beds in our yard. Brought in topsoil to build them up and planted azaleas, lorapetelums, gardenias, hawthornes, hydrangeas, and some small rose bushes. Also transplanted a 8 ft sweet bay magnolia.

From what I’ve read you need to wait two weeks to fertilize. I had a soil test done for my yard back In the spring and the soil was pretty acidic and low on most nutrients.

Should I fertilize the beds (I know it’s a bad idea to fertilize my centipede at this point) with a 10-10-10 or something like that? Or wait til next spring?

Thanks! Should I fertilizer beds regularly like lawns or once they get established leave them be?

Since the plants already come with fertilizer in the pots (containers) when planted there is no need to fertilize them until next spring, but a light application of a general purpose fertilizer won’t hurt.

ETA: Fertilize your Sweetbay Magnolia in Feb, and the shrubs in March, with a good delayed release general purpose fertilizer. I use LESCO 14-14-14 Polycoat. If you want to push growth of the plants you can apply a second application of fertilizer in May/June, for the first several years.

Thanks. We planted a good bit of new plants but we transplanted quite a few lorapetalums and hawthornes from the front to the back yard. I’ve been watering furiously lol.

I’m most excited about the magnolia. I really hope it survives. I think they are beautiful trees and I worked my arse of to get it lol.
