People down the street (in NOLa) have a papaya tree in the front yard. Pretty cool looking...

Had no idea these would grow in zone 9.

Most of the several I've seen in NO are like this one--right up against a house, close enough to get some thermal protection.

Ive seen quite a few productive papayas over the years in SE LA....typically in a protected courtyard or up against a house. They live for a while but eventually a serious winter gets em in the end. Ditto for avocados.....though I understand there are a few more cold tolerant avocado varieties, wish I could get my hands on one of those.

I'm jelly too. When we were kids there used to be fruiting avocado trees near Pizzo Leather Company in the CBD.

I have 2 in my yard but neither have made fruit yet. One is about that size. Any idea how old that tree is?

I'm guessing 2 years. Any type of freeze even mild and it's pretty much dead.

I got mine from Cleggs last year. Took a bit of a hit last winter, but I didn’t do much to protect it.

Had a papaya tree a few years ago, but my dog ate it after a year.
