Ours (Whirlpool side-by-side) is going out. Repair man has come, swaps some parts, but its back to freezing up the coil and the fridge section getting warm.

Wanted to see if anyone has made a recent purchase and has recs. Also, what new features are out there now.

TIA

I bought this Whirlpool back in 2018 and have had zero issues.

One of the biggest selling points for me was the dual ice makers.

Appliance guys say you can’t get a good one anymore.
LG got in a lot of trouble a couple years ago for crap compressors so their new ones are expected to be significant improvements.
I would avoid any French door unit with ice maker in the doors due to complexity.
Side by side has best deals by far. We found one on sale for $1200 that had everything we wanted and then some. Unfortunately, the old lady needed French door so those same features were more than double the price.

Just went thru this. I finally gave up on my Frigidaire POS.
I chose a Whirlpool WRF535SWHZ. That is a french door WITHOUT a door water or ice dispenser. The water dispenser is in the refrig in the left wall and the icemaker is in the freezer where it belongs.
I watched a few hours of Youtube and settled on this one.
The Lowes experience however (MS Gulf Coast) was terrible and way too much to type.

We bought a ge cafe one which is essentially a ge profile but more aesthetically pleasing.

Were happy with it. I think with most brands there's always trade offs just depending on the style you get. Ice maker in the door which may have issues over time vs taking space up in the freezer and/or fridge. Same thing with water dispenser location etc.

We favored usable space in the fridge itself and the the freezer is laid out well with multiple compartments. There's also a third drawer which can been used as a freezer or fridge compartment depending on what you want.

General rule. Avoid Samsung and LG.

KitchenAid usually performs very well, although I had one go out within three years, as in, it had so many issues, it wasn't worth repairing.

I'm a big fan of Fisher & Paykel.

Whatever you do, do NOT get a Samsuck, especially the French Door bottom freezer model!

Your issue can only be cause by 3 things.

Defrost control, heating element, defrost thermostat/ thermistor.
Changing all 3 would still be a 1/3 the price of a new machine.

I say this all the time. Unless it's the compressor always fix your older fridges.

Never buy a freezer/refrigerator that has the ice maker in the door, and in the refrigerated part of the refrigerator. You're asking for trouble.

And unfortunately, the majority of refrigerator/freezers sold today have this as a "convenient feature."

This is why I recommended F&P. The model that I have has the ice maker inside the freezer. Yes, I have to use a scoop to get ice, but I won't have to worry about the issue you described.
