Mower suggestions

I’ve read a couple old threads on this board but wanted to see if any opinions have changed or any suggestions on a mower.
Just bought a home that’s got a little over a half acre of yard, pretty flat, with the budget being a little low now given the big expense (the house) I’m looking to get a push mower for the time being. There’s a ditch as well that’s not very well suited for a riding mower so I’ll have to have a push anyways. I’ve seen a lot of good things about the Ego brand of push mowers and I think the batteries for the mower are compatible with the weeded eater and leaf blower so to me that’s a plus. Anyone have this brand? Thoughts? Complaints? Any other brands worth taking a look at?

riding mower. mow as much of ditch as possible and weedeater the rest. Eff a pusher.

Not possible to get in the ditch with a riding mower. Too close to a fence and a road. It would just be all weedeating
I should clarify the yard isn’t .5 acres that’s the entire property with the house, porch, shed etc.

That’s a fair point
Any suggestions on a riding mower then?

I would get a Toro self propelled and not think twice.
I would not get a battery powered mower for 1/2 acre.

This all day long. Shouldn't take you more than 30 min to mow that lot. I had a quarter acre lot and mowed and weedeated the whole thing in under 15 minutes. Self propel will help with the ditch.
You won't find a riding lawn mower worth a damn on a budget unless you come across a good used deal.

That’s my fear, I’d rather push it for now until I get my savings better and then I’d like to get a good riding mower instead of going cheap and having all kinds of issues

Do you have a specific model you favor?

Good time of year to look for a lightly used high quality riding mower.
X300 and X500 from John Deere are both excellent.
Basically anything you have to buy from a dealer is going to be much better quality than anything you can buy at HD/Lowes.

I bought a toro self propelled last year to basically destroy on rough terrain. It's still here. I do go through parts though

If your budget is low, find a $300-$400 Toro.
Save up for a good EGO push mower. Newer models will cut that just as well as any gas mower and the self-propel is way quicker than any gas mower if that's something you want.
You can get a good EGO for less than $800 and continue using the battery with the rest of their ecosystem. If anything, buy their weedeater/blower combo. I'll provide links soon.

EGO POWER+ Select Cut 56-volt 21-in Cordless Self-propelled 7.5 Ah (Battery and Charger Included)
$499 on Lowe's website until December 6. This is what I have. Dual blades and has one for a high lift cut and one for extended run time. Mdoel # LM2135SP
EGO POWER+ 56-volt Cordless Battery String Trimmer and Leaf Blower Combo Kit (Battery & Charger Included)
$249 for both weedeater and blower. Nothing super heavy duty but it will do the job you need.
Altogether you can get these for less than $900 and be well off.

My Jackass neighbor tries to cut the back half of their acre with a electric mower. It takes them multiple days.
I use a gas powered zero turn for my whole acre and it takes like an hour.....
You decide

So your neighbor is probably old and can't stand up for very long is what you're telling me? I'm not sure why he's a jackass.

A majority of gas mower enjoyers on this forum are absolutely brain dead. Do you think a $5000 gas zero turn is going to be useful on a small lot? OP can spend a fraction of the cost of a zero turn/riding mower and do just as good a job with any push mower for half an acre.
I wouldn't use a zero turn on my yard because:
1. I have nowhere to store it. My electric equipment takes up very little space for where I store it.
2. I don't need to keep filling up with gas when my batteries are charged and ready every use. Never have to go out and buy fuel, ever.
3. I don't have entrances between my front and backyards to accommodate a zero turn mower. I would have to redesign my fencing to do so.
4. My electric mower has paid itself back already compared to what I would've gotten back from a zero turn mower had I had the capabilities of owning one.

Bilbo - how big is your yard?
My grandma had an Ego (it was older) and it would cut her yard barely, and if you used the self propelled feature then it wouldn't make for the entire yard. Maybe the tech has got better but I would rather a gas all day long.
You can get a good lawn tractor for under 2K and zero turns for 3K.

I've got 1/3 acre. Takes me an hour to cut/edge/weedeater/blower. During the summer I usually need a second battery if the lawn is too high but I get it done. We have a ton of trees I have to maneuver around as well. I've still spent less than $1200 on all my equipment. I don't need the self propel because the mower is fairly light already.

Takes you long enough to not be in a position to call any one braindead certainly.
For the OP, Toro is probably the best of the residential gas models since Honda exited the market. If you are a buy-once-cry-once type they have a $1,600 model with a Kawasaki engine in their heavy-duty line.
