Depending on how big your house is and what all the movers are doing that quote seems high. We had 2bedroom apartment and storage unit moved from PA to MT for $4500. We packed everything into boxes they loaded and unloaded truck. It did take 2.5 weeks to get delivery but it’s a 30hr drive. We drove car separately. We only had one coffee cup break. We had 2 other quotes but they were still only as high as $6200.

Side note shipping her horse was about the same cost. People thinks boats are expensive, get a horse.

renting a 26' uhaul and movers to help load/unload

I've used this exact method to move numerous times. Uhaul trucks are pretty comfortable and easy to drive.

In fact, when I ran a record label, the vinyl was pressed a few hours away in New Jersey. I usually just paid two employees to go with me in a Uhaul instead of having to deal with a 3rd party trucking company leaving five 1000lb pallets on the sidewalk outside the office at 8am/pm.

The last one I drove I think had a governor on it. Couldn't go past 65. I had about an hour from the small town to the interstate, but once I got on there it wouldn't go any faster.

I've driven them with governors as well, which is a pain, but I'll do you one even more annoying.

Was moving myself in a Hertz-Penske truck from Atlanta back to New Orleans in summer 1990. Everything was going well at decent speeds until I was a little ways south of Atlanta and then for some reason after I had slowed down or stopped the truck wouldn't go past 45 mph. If I tried to give it more gas the truck would shudder and shake and not accelerate, but if i ran it at 45 it ran fine.

This was before cell phones, so I stopped and called Hertz-Penske at payphones but they could do nothing or offer nothing. I finally decided to just go on at that infuriatingly slow speed of 45 mph, everyone passing me by, a 7 hour trip turning in to a 10+ hr. drive.

Shortly before I got home I pulled in at Slidell because I needed gas. I accidentally put in premium instead of regular. As soon as I was crossing the twin spans over Lake Pontchartrain, the damn truck "loosened up" and I was going 65-70 mph again. Not sure if it was the higher octane gas or the cooler night air or what, but damn --why couldn't I have mistakenly put in the good gas earlier?

I used them for a last-minute move and was surprised how smooth everything went. If you’re comparing options for long hauls, their long distance movers cheap option worked well for me, especially since they handled packing and unpacking too. The insurance and flexible scheduling took a lot of stress off my plate, and booking online knocked a bit off the price.
