All of a sudden our microwave trips a breaker the instant you plug it in. We’ve tried different outlets on different circuits and it does the same thing, so I suspect the microwave is the culprit. I’m told it could be either an internal fuse or the magnetron. If the latter, I would just replace the microwave due to cost of the part.

How can I further diagnose which it might be so that I can not waste money on a service call, if it turn out to be the magnetron? Any ideas?

One odd observation: I think the screen has been dim the last few weeks leading up to this and is related. The microwave tripped a breaker for the first time yesterday. I corrected some iffy wiring connections and plugged back in. Microwave worked overnight with the screen bright again. Today, it trips any circuit breaker I plug it into. Tia.

Well it's not the fuse and apparently not the outlet.

Just leaves the microwave....

Yep, looking to understand if I can troubleshoot to find what component within the microwave is faulty. A cheap one or expensive one.

Ours did same thing, replaced the door catch switch.

It's a normal open switch so when it fails its shorts out the system.

Take it apart

Unplug the magnetron, diode, transformer, and control switches. There’s a heat, light, moisture, and a couple door interlock switches. Start plugging them back in starting from the primary, one at a time. Plug it in each time you add something. When it starts tripping again you have identified your problem.

Before replacing the microwave, bang the shite out of it. Slam the door a few times.

Seriously. Over the years I've found a very useful tool is to bang something hard before giving up.

There might simply be something like a crumb or something hanging up somewhere.

Try it. Guaranteed to work 100% of the time, almost every time.

Seems like you answered them yourself.

Something in your MW is either causing a dead short or it's pulling crazy amps and tripping your breakers.

In any event, maybe try asking your wife's boyfriend. Maybe he can help.

you did that by trying other plugs

you confirmed there is a major short inside the microwave so its time to buy a new one.

anything affordable to replace it would just not work but not blow fuses. so it is going to be the transformer that creates thew microwaves, and the replacement cost on that is 90% the cost of the whole microwave.

the general rule with electrical things is, if nothing works its usually something simple and easy to fix. if its blowing fuses there is a 80% chance you need to buy a new one

Not to beat a dead horse, but it seems that you should just buy a new microwave. If it's several years old, it wouldn't hurt to get a new one. Most of the time the parts to replace will cost so much that a new unit would be better purchase.

Since, apparently, this is the OT today….

Lol. Relax. Your shift will be over soon.

Have you bought a new MW yet, or are you still trying to determine if all of your circuits are bad or if the problem is in the MW?

The only thing confusing me at the moment is wtf you care.

Then again I’ve always found haters to be much worse off than me, so cest la vie, I suppose.

I'm far from hating. I'm enjoying this.

What about your outdoor GFCI outlets? Have you tried the MW on one of those?

I’m not sure you could prove my point any better if you tried.

But really though, are you buying a new one or are you repairing your old one?
