My yard is bermuda in front and sides (maybe 7500 square feet). Would a manual reel mower be best to buy? I’ve been using a regular mower to cut it, but I think a reel mower would make it look even better. Suggestions?

Yeah of course because you can take it down to 1/2” with the reel mower. No brainer if you’re willing to do the work.

A guy told me one time that a reel mower cuts upward when cutting grass and the tug of the upward pressure on the grass causes it to grow faster.... he is an engineer that graduated from the Colorado school of mines... I hated working with him.

A reel mower is much better. It's a cleaner cut like scissors vs rotary which tears or rips the blade of grass. If you have a small yard, a manual can be fine. If you have a larger yard, look into buying a used gas-powered reel or greens mower.

I've never used it on bermuda, but I've used a manual reel mower on Zoysia and st aug. Bermuda is probably easier because it doesn't get as thick, but a reel mower cuts great when you don't have to cut much. But golf courses cut basically daily. If you are only looking to cut once a week and take like a 1/2 inch off its going to be a biatch. Manual reel mowers are very hard work to do anything but a very light trim.

With a reel mower, don’t let the grass miss a cutting.

I tried using a reel mower for a while, and my take is that the ground needs to be very level. dips, bumps, and areas where the grass varies in height make it difficult. If I top dressed my yard perfectly level, I might think abt using the manual reel occasionally. for now it doesn't look different enough from a self propelled to make it worth it.

If you do use a reel mower, the yard needs to be as smooth as possible for a clean cut. Also, you had better be ready to devote every 3rd day to mowing, in some cases every other day.

ETA: If I had a really nice Bermuda yard and could afford it, I’d purchase one of these bad boys... LINK
