I need about 12 pallets of sod laid in the back of my property, its all weeds now. Do I need to till all that up or just lay some topsoil on top and then lay the sod on that?

Personally, I’d kill it all and till it up to lay the sod on top. You don’t need to till it very deep or really tear it up (could lead to leveling issues), just want to break the top surface and compaction to help the sod root through.

No reason to spend all that money and time on sod, just for the existing weeds to grow up through it.

When you say kill it all, how do you mean? I assume I don't want to round up it...

Glyphosate (herbicide in traditional roundup, not the newer stuff) is absorbed through the leaves and has no residual soil activity. It is non-selective so it will kill everything, but once you place your new sod on top, it will not have any effect on it or the roots.

Just make sure it’s not anything that “kills all year long”, which does have residual activity. Generic glyphosate is perfectly fine and cheaper than name brand versions.

Should you wait any amount of time after applying glyphosate before putting sod down? When I sodded they said to let it go for a week then sod after a week. Not sure if there is any logic there.

Ranger Pro is the generic version of what I used. It was significantly cheaper than the RoundUp brand glyphosate.

Well, you’re trying to actually kill the plants you spray, so it generally takes a couple days for the “poison” to translocate through the plant and kill it. Depending on the plant and strength, along with heat/etc, the weeds can take up to a couple weeks to fully wither and die.

Generally, the glyphosate is inactive as soon as it binds with the soil. So it’s not about washing away residual product, but more about ensuring it is effective in the treatment.

I’d suggest to wait at least 2-3 days, just to ensure the target weeds fully absorb and translocate the product (helped by photosynthesis). A week doesn’t hurt, but likely unnecessary.
