Just got this email, so passing it along. They are opening a 3 day lottery window for the fortify grant program in Louisiana. It appears to only apply to the coastal region, so most of AP and EBR is out.

This round of grants is limited to residents of Louisiana’s Coastal Zone and of Lake Charles, Sulphur and Westlake. Is it worth applying for this if your roof is ~4-5 years old but not fortified? Not sure what all goes into the roof fortification process.

It starts from the clean deck up.
Aggressive nails and spacing on all plywood.
Taped seams or 100% coverage of water and ice shield .
Better drip ledge overhang.
Better than average rated shingles.
Increased shingle nailing schedule
All 3rd party inspected during and after to get your certification

What’s the ballpark out of pocket amount (after the grant)?

The grant covers 10k of the cost, goes directly to the roofer.
My house is 3200 sq feet and I was 12k out of pocket.
I had some roofers that were as high as 30k. My total roof cost was 22k, wok grant and 12k out of pocket.

Doesn't most of the rest of the country do this as standard practice already?

Not to the best of my knowledge.
I know Florida has their own standard and many of the Fortified Roof standards were based off their findings. I think most parts of the country build roofs the same, but Louisiana SHOULD build all roofs like this. I think the biggest difference is in areas of snow, you get the water and ice shield higher or in different areas to combat leaks from ice dams.

It's over an hour wait currently. Adjust just left my home with a recommendation for a full replacement of my roof. Hopefully this helps my consideration

The roofing company that installed my roof after Ida did all of these things. It was required to validate the warranty.

I believe there are ways to have it certified after the fact, but I'm not sure. I know my roofing company took over 1k photos during installation that had to be provided too the Fortified Certification people, and then they sent an independent inspector out for an hour to go through my attic and roof after installation was done.
