How has no one in here said the fricking right answer is simply facing south for gods sake.

South facing pros:
- Sun melts driveway snow best
- North facing picture windows on back of house (great for natural lighting)
- Having a side facing west helps reduce AC demand if there is no sun blocking on that side of house and there are very few windows on the side
South facing cons:
- During winter, the north facing rear picture windows don't get any solar heat gain for the interior
- During the summer, more sunlight will come through the huge picture windows on the back of the house increasing AC usage
- Back porch/patio is almost unusable during the summer (assuming it is hot there)
- Back patio/porch gets no direct sun in the winter making it almost unusable in the cold weather or in pleasant weather like cool fall/spring days because you can only feel breeze and not the sun.
Every orientation will have pros/cons.

We live on a wooded lake lot where the front of the house faces the Southwest. We spend most of our time in the back of the house in our long sunroom, deck and screened porch on the back of our house which all face the northeast. It's perfect for us. In the summer, the early morning sun is shimmering on the lake and there's enough shade until late morning. In the afternoon all of these spaces are shaded in the back while our more heavily shaded front yard is still not too hot in comparison to a full sun lot. All sides of the house get enough sunlight to not have any areas that have mildew issues.
