Is there a way to make sure my elevation certificate is correct?

Says that my elevation needs to be at a 10.8’. I am building right across from my father in law. His elevation is at 11.5’. His house looks like it will be lower than mine since I had dirt hauled. My house will have a 2ft drop brick ledge. I think I am fine but FIL thinks something is wrong. I think it’s right but he keeps questioning.

Call your own surveyor if you want it checked. For what is worth, go at least 6" higher then you are required. This will round off to you being 1' above BFE. Dramatic decrease in flood insurance.

Think I am above where I need to be. I added a little because of drop brick ledge.

Why would you do this to yourself

Believe me, I know. But he is 73 and I love him dearly. Just questions everything and it’s more or less for his sanity in return my own.

Have another surveyor check it. His house could have been built at 11.5' and still be lower than yours at 10.8' depending on when his was built. Datums/Geiods change due to the earth changing and measurement techniques getting better. His 11.5' could be 10.5' on latest datum/geoid if his house is substantially older.

I've seen municipalities adopt 2 feet above BFE in their code enforcement. Go with that.

It's worth it to go 3 feet above minimum elevation, after that flood insurance no longer gets any cheaper.
I loved a house that the owner had a bogus elevation for. It seemed pretty low so I hired a survey. 6 inches below the minimum, hard pass on that one, unfortunately. Insurance would have been outrageous.

I think an elevation survey only cost about $250. Just get another for piece of mind and cheaper insurance
