Is it too late in the season to cut Zoysia a notch lower?

I keep it higher than recommended. Now too much brown.
Will scalp in the spring. Thanks

Why is it brown? Wouldn’t it make it more brown if you lower the HOC now?
I’d just keep it at this length for added protection through the winter months. Then scalp like normal in the spring.

Probably because I didn't scalp it at all this spring
Was just wondering if it is a "tips" issue and growing up a little from lower cut would be greener

I’m not familiar with Zoysia. I have Bermuda and raise my HOC this time of year. I put away the reel mower and cutting with a rotary mower now.

What's your HOC with reel vs rotary now?

Typically 0.75 with the reel. We had about a month of no rain around August so I raised it to about 1.25.
Rotary I set to 2 inches, so it gets to about 2.5 before cuts. I went to 2 inches 2 weeks ago. A little early this year but I was tired of cutting every 3 days.
Doing my fall pre-emergent application tomorrow.

Here’s a secret for you. Scalp it, cut it high, cut it low, it always grows back. Been cutting my st Aug low for ten years and still grows back everytime. Don’t listen to the 3.5 inchers and same goes for zoysia.

In my area, there is no rain predicted for 2-3 weeks, so am letting mine get a little taller than normal. I will still mow high to grind up leaves through the fall.

Not sure I agree with this. St Aug needs some meat on the bone.
I haven’t been able to cut zoysia short. It’s like a damn pillow. I wouldn’t want to cut it too short right now either way, want it to stand its ground through the winter. I’ve been sprigging mine the past few years and hoping next year it will take over.

I suppose overall I agree with you, but you can definitely slow it down cutting too short and stressing it, especially with scarce rain or intense heat. The st aug I have is probably 60 years old, has been through hell but it’s still most of my front yard. Seems to do best in more shade.
