You can rent a trencher for like $200 or less and do your trenches in like 60 mins for a 4-5 zone system and barely break a sweat. The only issues is where there are bigger roots.
I would absolutely NOT lay it out and test it above ground. It’s not going to fit and then you have to cut it and re glue.
It’s really not that hard with a trencher OP. I would not do it in summer but your grass will recover where as doing it in the fall or winter the grass may not and you have spots you’ll see all winter.

great damn idea
While a great idea doesn't hunter or rain bird or something have a service where you measure your yard and they lay out all the zones and tell you exactly what you need?
Seems like that would be easier than trying to trench around 100 yards of pipe and sprinkler heads. Then if your depth is off on any of the heads you've got to add funny pipe, etc.
I'd rather plan accordingly than put it all together first

I’ve got winter fescue grass in the area in question that I seed in the fall so the plan is to do it when ground temps hit around 70. It’s also not a big area. Back yard I don’t worry about and it’s huge and has Bermuda, front yard is fescue and the summer crushes it without irrigation.

we did our drip system ourselves, very easy. the lawn zone I considered doing it myself but after watching the landscaping guys do it they were way more meticulous than I probably would have been so glad they did it. We were having a lot of other work done to the same area at the time including leveling, sod, borders so digging the trench and running the pipes was only a portion in the whole picture

Do NOT use their kits. Rainbird ones either.

What did you use then?
I used Rainbird heads, but not the crappy thin lined piping. Used SCH40 3/4" pipe and rigged up my own sprinkler heads.
The kit comes with a very poorly constructed timer w/digital readout that goes out in a freeze or bad weather.
And Rainbird does have great sprinkler heads, just not in that crappy kit they sell. Remember sprinkler heads are not the same as the kit.
This is the kit I'm referring to

ETA: OP, if you do choose to DIY, make sure you have your underground lines marked by your local municipality otherwise you could be in for some trouble if you hit a line.
