I’m currently renting a 2 story 2300 sqft home, with a zoned HVAC system. The problem is that the two thermostats (upstairs and downstairs) don’t satisfy. I set them to 73, and no matter if the air temperature outside is 65 or 75, the thermostats won’t satisfy. In fact, even when it’s 60 or below at night the house is heating up to 79 if shut the thermostats off.

I checked all vents and they barely seem to be pushing air, one vent doesn’t push any. I went into the attic and when I stick my hand in the main dampers I can feel the cool air rushing through so why isn’t it efficiently getting to my vents and it’s causing my fan to work overtime to try and cool the house. The fan will run all day just to keep the temperature at 73 and it won’t satisfy.

What are some potential problems? I’m calling a tech tomorrow

Is the fan running outside? If not, your outside unit is probably bad.

The fan doesn’t stop running, that’s a symptom of the issue. And it’s one that was just installed, a 4 ton Goodman

Why are you calling a tech if you are renting?

You only have 1 4-ton for 2300 sq ft split level?

I have a carrier zoned system and had one of the diverters in the duct work go bad at the control board. Get in your attic and you’ll see where the paddle valves are located. If you get your wife to change the thermostat you should be able to watch if they open or close correctly. One of mine wasn’t getting the correct voltage to close from the control board so I doubled it up on the adjacent zone.

Costs too much to replace the board and the techs rarely have any sense to figure out what’s wrong. One time a tech came out and claimed he fixed it, but what actually happened is that he manually opened the diverter, the house was cooling for a while, and when it closed it wouldn’t reopen again.

Because the one they’ve sent out is saying what I’m experiencing is normal in a zoned system but only a fool would believe that.

You Harvard peeps should be able to figure this shite out in-house.

We dumb public university folk don’t have the necessaries to dream of suggesting a solution to you.

Ivy League yourself.

Or get a better house.

Whatever company you call, be sure to ask them to send a senior tech with experience in working with zoned systems. As you’ve already found out, not all HVAC techs are created equal and HVAC zoning is a speciality in itself.
