HVAC Spinoff Thread with Specific Question

Thank you Will Cover for the detailed list of questions for an HVAC contractor. Looking forward to that conversation.
I have a much narrower question. I have an old home in New Orleans with a large attic. The A/C duct work has been patched and it in poor shape. I am losing a lot of cooling, and I want to replace the ducts. The total square footage of the home is about 1600 feet.
Can anybody give me some advice on materials. contractors, price, etc.?
Any help appreciated.

As an old home, do you have ridgid, metal ducts or flexible ducts?
Metal ducts can be repaired and I’d keep them if possible, if you have them. Flex ducts if in bad shape would be replaced. And if replaced, this would be your opportunity to see if they are sized correctly for each room for your HVAC tonnage. In other words, you do want to hire someone who knows duct work really well.
If flex ducts, you would also want to R-8 insulated ducts. Sometimes it’s best to use a combination of flex & rigid - flex on long straight runs that can be stretched and pulled tight, rigid for sharp bends (to minimize friction with air flow) and where they connect to the supply registers.
Tons of good articles on the internet, here are a couple

If you have metal pipe duct, probably good idea to reinsulate them and better make darn sure that is done properly, or you’ll have condensation leaks.
