Do I just cut all light green new growth of and leave the top?

The trunk is already about 12 inches tall before branches start. Hard to see in the picture.

You want it to be taller? If so I wouldn’t cut any new growth until its hit the height you want. Trim from the bottom to keep whatever consistent lower canopy height you want as the tree grows

If you missed this recent thread, it might be helpful

As I recall you just planted those trees, if so I’d recommend you wait until the trees become established, maybe next winter before you consider any significant pruning/training. Maximum foliage helps in root establishment.

Ok thanks! That’s exactly what I was wondering. I know if you take off growth, the energy is forced to the rest of the tree so I mistakenly thought if cutting new growth off, it would force the tree taller. Because yes, I want these bad boys as tall as I can get them.

You’re right and thanks! I’ll check that out.
Looks like I just won’t touch them at all.

So if I just leave them alone and not touch them, they will get taller, not just bushier?

The natural form of a Savannah is pyramidal, so if you leave it alone it will grow taller and slightly wider.

What Zappas said, so yes taller and wider, in a pyramidal form.
