I planted a couple of new young azaleas 8 months back and I've been trying to keep up with keeping the trash weeds and grass from growing up in the bed. Can I spray anything that will kill the trash but not hurt the azaleas? Getting on my hands and knees and pulling out tiny sprigs of weeds and grass is getting tedious every couple of weeks. I tried mulch but that doesn't seem to work and I'm kicking my own arse for not laying down some kind of barrier first but I think it's too late I don't want to disturb the azaleas to put down any kind of barrier material

Remove the mulch, put down barrier and cut it in around the base of the azaleas, then replace the mulch.

Just know that even with a barrier, weeds will come. Birds will drop seeds in the mulch and they will sprout, and nut grass has no problem getting through most landscaping barrier.

I’ve never really had much luck with weed barriers. Maybe the first year. I stopped using them. I just remulch about 3 inches/year and spray weeds with Roundup or whatever if they come.

My vegetable garden is now in transition and about 60% of it is now empty and weeds have sprouted. Three days ago I got out the Round-up and sprayed just the weeds making sure to avoid the good stuff and all of them are now brown and wilted but the good plants are doing fine.

If you're careful, you can use a herbicide around ornamentals.

This.

And if the azaleas are still small enough place a five gallon bucket over the top of them while you spray.
