How often to change pool sand?

Title pretty much says it all.
We moved in a house with a pool 5 years ago and I have no idea when the previous owner last changed the sand in the pool filter. This year the water has never really gotten crystal clear like it has in previous years and I'm thinking the sand may need to be changed.
How often are long-time pool owners on here changing your sand?

I backwash my DE filter once a month and then open and completely clean the fins at least once a year.

Some places online say you never have to change it while others say the pool sand loses its sharp edges and needs to be changed periodically. That being said it is cheap and easy to do it yourself. I got the sand from the pool place on sherwood and changed it out myself. I didn’t see a huge improvement. It didn’t get better till I ordered a whole new sand filter and valve off of Amazon and replaced the old one . But go ahead change out the sand can always be. Reused in a new filter if it doesn’t give you the desired result

you sure you're managing it correctly?
actually slightly-dirty sand can do a better job filtering small particles than clean sand.
also you can add some DE to the pool strainer for additional filtering but you'll have to do this every time you backwash since it gets washed out.
speaking of, how often are you backwashing?
do you keep an eye on the water pressure and backwash whenever its 10% higher than normal?
do you ever open the impeller and remove any debris or tiny rocks that are caught up in that? i do that at least once a year to keep the pump running smoothly.
we bought this house 7 years ago and replaced the pool liner at the same time. we've never touched the sand filter. it just...works.
i have no plans to change the sand and the only time the pool doesn't look crystal clear is when i let the chlorine levels get too low or i need to add baking soda to balance the pH.

I was having trouble with high pressure in my sand filter and when I checked, the sand was just over 5 years old.
I replaced the sand and the pressure is back down to the 15# to 18# range.
YMMV

The ph and chlorine is fine. I’ll admit I let the chlorine get a little low so I’m gonna make sure it stays right for the next week or so and see what happens.

5 years, maybe 7.

Change your sand out for glass. Much smaller filtration size and never has to be changed.

A friend of mine just did this. I haven't talked to him to see what he thinks about it but he liked the "not having to do it again" idea.

My guess is that a little algae formed then died so thats why it looks a little dingy. That dead algae needs to be removed.
Keep everything on lock and clean the filters and strainers and I bet it will clear right up in a week or so.
