Starting my new home and after grading I realized I'm building on a slate shelf. It's brittle but sizes range from pebbles to 10x10 pieces. Obviously grass isn't going to grow on this. What's the best plan of action here? My initial thoughts are to put down a layer of topsoil about 4" thick on top of the rock then sod. Would that work? Any other ideas?

Break up the rock and remove it. Growing grass in 4 inches of soil is going to brown every time you go 5 days without rain.

How thick does it need to be?

Rocks under grass will make a brown spot, even deeper down.

I've got 20 acres on top of rock. Big rock, small rock, any kind of rock. It's fricking miserable. Bahia is your savior

Serious answer, Palisades zoysia will do just fine with 4-5 inches of soil. I've laid Palisades sod directly on fill dirt, stumps, rocks and it does just fine.

You need a sprinkler system.
