I am trying to grow plants from seeds in my garden, something I have been proficient at in the past. For some reason, this year I am not having much luck getting anything besides one variety of cucumbers to sprout. I am trying to grow bell peppers, okra, & cucumbers from seed. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

I used one of these seedling kits with lights and heated mat. It worked out well this year.

You're not alone on germination failure with new seeds. All the seeds I used were for this years planting so it's not like they were past their "use by" date.

I had to plant my okra, pole beans and cucumbers twice to get them to germinate and start growing. I direct sow those type seeds in the garden along with squash for the summer months.

Tomatoes, bell and hot peppers, eggplants and a few herbs I buy already started in 3 or 4 packs and transplant them into the rows.

Did you soak the okra seeds first? I always had a lot better germination if I soaked them in water for 6-8 hours or so before planting.

I've never planted pepper seeds directly in the garden. I always started them under grow lights and then transplanted, or bought plants.

No. I soaked the okra seeds in warm water for 6 hours. Maybe not long enough but you would think at least one seed out of 30 would germinate. None germinated, ans this is odd bc okra has been very easy to grow from seed in past years

Have you checked your soil temperature at 6”?

Have not checked soil temp but the garden is in full sunlight. Soil temp would explain the peppers not germinating though. From what i gather, you really need to start them indoors on a heat lamp/pad.

I just bought some new seeds, hoping it was a bad batch. Soaking them now. I will plant tomorrow and hopefully get better results

That would probably d\be my approach as well. You might try digging some of the existing seeds up to see what they look like, too. See if they didn’t germinate at all, sprouted and died, etc.

Tell us what you found.

I didn’t have a single okra seed germinate. I soaked the rest of the pack and replanted them Wednesday. I also only had 9 of 14 cantaloupes sprout and 3 of 4 squash sprout. I replanted some of those too. This 2+ inch rain we just got either helped or washed them away. My garden is 4 miles from my house and I haven’t been out there today. Still raining in Tuscaloosa.

ETA: I planted my garden on 4/13 and dug up the okra row and couldn’t even find a seed. Definitely no sprouts. Bought the seeds at Home Depot.

I used to have trouble with okra until I found out taking the seed straight from the freezer and planting in 70+ degree soil makes them sprout better.
