A family member has a KitchenAid side by side fridge/freezer...the freezer is holding steady at five degrees but the fridge has been fluctuating between mid-50's and mid-30's.

The unit is 18 years old.

Thoughts on what might be causing this? They want to try to fix themselves before calling a repair man.

My fridge just did this and it was the control board. $250 to fix.

Could be a few things though.

Id try defrosting it first, maybe the door got left cracked and it froze something up.

Is the bottom super cold but the top warmer? If so the fan might be out which isn’t moving the cold air away from the freezer to the top.

Thanks. I would think that if the coils are frozen, the temperature would stay high and not fluctuate… Does that make sense?

My kitchen aid did this. Bottom freezer was cold but the refrigerator part was warm. Ended up being the evaporator fan. Couldn’t find a repair man so did it myself. Was a pain in the rear end to change. Unfortunately the replacement fan came with a female end and the wire coming from the fridge was female. Had to cut and splice the male part on the old fan. Worked for about 3 months and went out again! Ended up going with a new whirlpool. Some reason or another, the kitchenaid’s give more problems than the whirlpool. Doesn’t make sense because they all in the same family.

Yes, but if the door was left open/cracked condensation could have formed in the tube or whatever that lets cold air from the freezer into the fridge. If that condensation froze it could trap the little door shut not letting the really cold air from the freezer over to the fridge.

This or turn it off for a couple days and then turn back on. Anything past that is not worth me fixing on my current fridge. At 18 years old it might just be time to get a new one

Thermostat. Maybe. I changed the thermostat on our garage fridge, it was cooling intermittently. I changed the capacitor first but I don’t think that was the issue. I could bump the fridge with my fist and make it run before thermo changeout.
Check condenser fan, changed that, too a few yrs ago. Clean the dust and shite off the condenser coils.
