Had the state DOTD clean a drainage ditch along the highway and they did a pretty shitty job. The drainage was piss poor so wanted them to skim it to allow for flow can I expect it to silt in some? Hate to have to weed eat it every time I cut grass. Would want to cut with riding mower. Pic for reference.

It’s about 1 ft deep

Why not just spray it with a herbicide and kill the grass as it comes in? No need to cut.

You didn't mention how wide the ditch is, but I would think a 1 ft. deep ditch could easily be cut with a riding mower with no issue.

It’s about 3 feet wide and never was an issue for cutting as ditch has never been cleaned out in maybe 40 years. Wasn’t an issue until the culvert for my driveway was put down deeper than the ditch was not allowing water to flow through to get out. Everything would back up because water would have to climb up to be able to get out and that doesn’t happen.

You want a swale and not a ditch.

If I were you I’d but some 6” or “ pvc pipe and bury in your ditch. When you backfill the pipe leave a slight swale.

Damn, by that pic they did a piss poor job. Maybe get a tiller and run it through there a few times to bust up all those clods of dirt and then rake it smooth to form it up better.

I would taper the sides some and then put some limestone in that to match what the larger ditch looks like.

I ended up cutting the cut up grass around it and pushed the loose dirt back in the ditch to make it look a little better, like someone said, I will taper the sides a little once it’s finished being dug to give it a swale like stated. They screwed up my driveway in the process with the excavator and will be going ride tomorrow to the office to see when it will be taken care of and when rest of ditch will be taken care of. It’s been a headache ever since I built my house last year. Only difference was we had a drought and ditch wasn’t a problem until this year when water wouldn’t escape from being stopped by the ditch not being cleaned properly. Thanks for the help and will be fixining it up.

Quick question, would using a small flat chopper set at an angle to chop the sides work? Trying to figure out if box blading would be better or just running a chopper on each side of ditch to taper it down would work. I could then blade it once it rains on the clods to smooth it out a bit on the sides.
