Found the magic mix rate for MSM Turf without burning St. Augustine

At this point, I don't care about stressing my St. Aug. It will come back. I'm tempted to purposefully use too much.

Applied for the second time this summer yesterday. I used a surfactant this time. Fingers crossed. Oh, and a little 24d for good measure.

It’s roughly 75x50 but that’s just eyeballing it. Never measured the area. All I know is whatever concentration fell onto the buttonweed worked by mixing .1 oz of it in four gallons of water. I sprayed the area, had about a gallon left, then mixed in glyphosate to spray my ditches with the remainder after.

Using your numbers and some arithmetic, you applied 0.02 oz of MSM per 1000 sq ft, or equivalent to a tad short of 1 oz per acre - that is recommended application rate on MSM Turf label for “control” of VBW. MSM Turf Label, page 13
(50 x 75 =3500 sq ft, you sprayed 3 of 4 gallons, so 0.075 oz; 0.075 oz divided by 3.5 = 0.02 oz per 1000 sq ft).

The 0.02 oz is basically equivalent to 0.5 gram or 1/8 teaspoon of MSM per 1000 sq ft of turf. Use enough water in the sprayer to cover a 1000 sq ft - for some that might be 1 gallon other others maybe 2 gallons or in between. Each sprayer is different as is one’s walking gait while spraying.

I spot sprayed an area about 75x50.

It’s confusing to many as more often than not mixing-dilution rates in water is the norm for applying herbicides for residential lawns, and not delivering a certain weight of the herbicide per 1000 sq ft (or acre) as is the case for MSM Turf. In that case you need to think of water as only a carrier to help deliver the weight of the herbicide called for per 1000 sq ft. It does not matter if you apply 1 gal or 4 gal of water per 1000 sq ft as long as that water contains 0.02 oz of MSM (in the case of VBW).

So what one needs to do is to “calibrate” the sprayer they use. On your driveway mark an area of 1000 sq ft (50 x 20). Then spray area with water using your normal walking gate to figure how much water you need to cover 1000 sq ft. If only a gallon of water in the sprayer covers 500 sq ft, then you then you need 2 gallons to cover a 1000 sq ft.

In my case with my sprayers (Solo brand) and my walking gate I usually need 2 gallons of solution to cover 1000 sq ft. Others need less, others perhaps more, or in between. Articles on the web on how to calibrate your sprayer.
