Should I apply fresh topsoil to beds before putting down new straw?

I usually don’t, just put straw on top of old stuff. Beds are 6 years old, so established.

Thanks!

That would be any decaying plant matter….peat moss, potting soil, composted leaves/grass clippings, etc.

Cleaning up beds this weekend, 3 weeds looked suspicious.

Using one of the apps, there’s a black walnut sapling, a hickory sapling, and a red maple sapling.

The oak and hickory are self explanatory, but where’d the red maple come from? Mulch maybe?

Maple seed pods are like little helicopters that get carried on the wind. It landed in a good spot and took hold.
