I've got a flagstone patio which appears to lie on pea gravel and joints were filled with polymeric sand. The joints are in terrible shape with weeds growing through and just looks bad. My plan is to clear out any material around the stones to the depth of the stones and replace with some sort of joint material. The gaps between the stone are as great as 3 inches.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I've read to avoid regular polymeric sand due to the size of the joints required. I found a polymeric stone ( Gator Dust Bond) but am doubtful I can find it locally (Baton Rouge). Does anyone have any recommendations on a joint material or a local shop selling said material?

Thanks.

3" gaps!!!!!! you are screwed

all you can do with that is pull them up, weed and level the area, spray it down good with 50/50 gas diesel mixture to permanently kill any remaining unseen weeds, and use a vibrating compactor to level and compact the surface

now replace pavers, cover with sand and sweep it around until you fill the cracks and then use a vibrating compactor to pack the sand into the gaps. continue adding sand and compacting until its solid and hard and cracks are full

Thanks for the replies. We are teetering between just clearing and attacking the joints ourselves versus hiring someone to pull up all the stones and re-doing the job.

If anyone knows of any landscape people who do this type of work and would want to bid on a smaller job (short walkway + about 20'x20' sitting area), please let me know.

can you dig the joints out with a hand trowel?
if you can, and you can loosen it, you can then blow them clean with an air compressor

lots of work but cheap

once thats done treat it heavily with herbicide and then you can sweep in more sand or you can grout the joints with mortar
