I grow peppers. Bell peppers are tough because the fruit has to stay on the plant for a long time while it grows, and any number of bad things will have a very good chance of happening. Serranos are easier.

I use...

Miracle-Gro Moisture Control potting mix (since I use pots)

Captain Jack's Dead Bug (spinosad)

Espoma Organic Soil Acidifier

Fox Farms Tiger Bloom

I no longer use...

Diatomaceous earth (messy, doesn't seem effective)

Bone meal (attracts animals)

Neem Oil (seems to kill plants)

I grow only in half compost mixed with my soil. Lots of fresh vegetable pieces and scraps freshly mixed in compost along with many other things. My compost very active and also still lots not broken down. The healthiest plants I can grow love this and are bulletproof. Bugs....yeah lets see them try. Figured this out long ago when i planted a pepper in a pot of mostly not broken down yet compost and wow.

You can also mix river sand in your compost instead of soil. Has to be riversand.

I also just grow in piles of riversand. Things like potatoes/sweet potatoes I just throw compost around them when i plant.

Tomatoes also have great flavor grown in riversand.

How do you make your compost?

I have watched some videos of people that get a garbage can, drill holes in the bottom, then alternate between grass clippings/leaves/food scraps and wet it.

Do you mix these things in throughout the season? I've never done composting within a raised bed (around active plants), but it's an intriguing concept.

i built a four sided bin out of plastic pallets standing on end, and cover it with an old trampoline mat. cost was free, works great

just make sure wherever you put it that its in the shade, and near a water source so you can keep wet during the scorching dry days of summer

What problems have you had with Neem oil. I am new at gardening and have been using it on my Meyer Lemon tree (Potted) and some of my hibiscus plants that are planted in the yard. The Hibiscus have black spots on the leaves.
