Forget the saw. Just use a mattock. Cut the roots and use the tree as a lever to pull the stump. I'm doing this in my yard, and I've done several >10" dia oaks, a few >12" cedars, and a >15" pine.

Metal Trashcan
Saw
I used to have 30 trees in my yard that dumped all kinds of limbs, all year long. I had a metal trash can I drilled holes around the base and would use to burn all the limbs.
Buying a cheap electric chain saw and a metal trash can would be $90.
Let everything dry out, grab some diesel (NOT gas), cut it down to size and start burning.

Sounds like you could have saved yourself a lot of time and trouble if you spent a few minutes to plan this out before your started. I tell my wife all the time when she asks me about projects she wants done and it looks like I am not doing anything. In actuality I am working on it in my mind developing a plan so that when I start its as easy as it can be.
Second advice, use these projects as an opportunity to buy useful tools with the money needed to rent tools or pay others to do work.
