Anyone ever actually rent a dump trailer? I am considering buying one for my own use and if people actually rent them have thought about renting it occasionally. Anyone have an experience?

Curious how it is going to go. I've considered it a few times. I'm guessing you have at least a 3/4 ton truck? 4 or 5 yards of material is a lot of weight depending on what you're hauling. I've put 2 yards of compost on a trailer before and a half ton struggles with it. Pulled it, but the truck don't like it for sure.

I got a "load" of gravel at a quarry about 30 years ago in a half ton long bed truck...they dropped it from about 20 feet and I thought it was going to flip the damn thing over. It was nearly level with the bed and about a foot higher in the middle. I have no idea how much it weighed....was supposed to be a half ton but it was a lot more than that. I could barely keep it in the road...it was WAY more load than it was supposed to carry. It don't take long to get a ton of dirt or gravel in the bed of a truck....and a ton of either doesn't go as far as one would think LOL.

I have a 2014 GMC 3500 long bed that I am pretty much stuck with, that's one of the reasons I am considering it. I could sell my truck, I only use it to pull a 20 foot jon boat, but I ain't willing to part with it for what it would sell for.

I am going to need a dump trailer for about 6 months and can buy a used one, use it and sell it and lose less than renting one 4-5 times would cost but I like the idea of keeping it around, if there is actually a market for renting them. A lot of places around me trying to rent them but I have no idea if they actually ever do it.

I rented a dump trailer a number of times years ago. From the same company. Upon returning it, I asked when do they replace them. The owner said, he was ready to replace the one I was using. I said, I’ve used it enough, how much? $1,500. I’ve had this thing for around 20 years. I could sell it now for $1,500. Well worth the purchase.

I bought a compact loader/backhoe about 20 years ago for one project thinking I would sell it when I was done. Every time I turned around I found another use for the thing. Made some pretty good cash with it also. I sold it a few years ago for about what I paid for it and have wished I didn't probably 100 times. I am about to buy another one. I suspect a dump trailer will be the same way...I need it for about 6 months and in 6 months wonder how I got by without one.

Renting your personal equipment is such a terrible idea, i question your mental capacity.
The upside is low and the downside is/could be life altering per judgement.

I've had a couple of instances when I had the Tundra that they dropped the load pretty quick or from higher than I'd like them to. It definitely drops the springs pretty abruptly. Since you got a 1 ton, a dump trailer shouldn't be an issue towing. Whoever paid $1,500 for a dump trailer, that's a steal of a deal. I'd go buy one today for $1,500 and I don't even have an immediate use for it. But hauling even a yard in the bed of your truck is a pain since you have to shovel unload it.

Yep, bought it, stays at my nephews place. I use it once or twice a year. I’ll just keep it. My nephew uses it way more than I do.

As said a limited amount of people can pull it and once you set it up as a business it’s going to be hard to beat the price of established dumpster rentals. For most people by the time you drive to pick it up, drive to the dump to drop it off, and then drive to return it a dumpster is better off being rented.

Materials like dirt can often be delivered for like $20-50 load. Not worth renting a trailer to do yourself.
