So, we are in the final stages of our home remodel. I have bought all new exterior door knobs and deadbolts. Here is the dumb question, how do I set all the locks to use one key? Thanks.

When buying the same brand and style you can match the codes on the package to have the same key. If you bought from Lowe’s or HD they can change out the pins on one or two for free to get them matched. Pretty sure they did for me in the past. Lastly, have a locksmith come to your house. They can match them all for a fee.

What if I have schlage locks on 3 doors and a kwikset on my front door? Do they all have to be the same brand?

Also, if you have good attention to detail, rekeying a lock isn't that hard. What brand did you get, I'm assuming Schlage or Kwikset? Schlage sells a rekey kit. You have to remove the cylinders and set new pins, but it isn't hard. If you haven't installed them yet, take them back to where you got them and see if they can get them all set the same. We did this at my house when we moved in. I think it was 3 doorknobs and 3 deadbolts.

They do not have to be the same brand. As TU Rob said, if you haven’t installed them bring them back with your receipt and they should do it for you.

That would be awesome. They are all in the package and from home depot. Thanks.

ETA: I just called HD and the dude they do it, but it has to be done before I leave with the locks. Otherwise, I have to get a locksmith to do it. I told him that is cool. I will return the locks I bought then go buy them again and have the keyed. He laughed and said that will work. Silly world.

Then look at the codes on the back of the package. You can just exchange them for matching units/numbers.

Ask for help at the store if you're unsure.

I don’t think those have the same key. See if kwickset
Key fits in Schlage lock and vise versa. That’s the key you’ll use. Doesn’t have to do anything but fit in the cylinder

2 different key designs. Won’t work.

Kwikset has a relatively new lock system called SmartKey. It allows you to rekey a lock as many times as you want within 30 seconds. They’re a few dollars more per lock but worth every penny. If I were you, I would return what I bought and replace them with the Kwikset SmartKey line

Sounds like a good idea.

I bought the SmartKey locks during my renovation and it was money well spent. I kept the locks on different keys during the work so I could allow access to different parts of the house for the crew. Once they wrapped up and left, I keyed everything the same. Took me about 15 minutes to do six doors.

you buy them as a set for all to use the same key at no extra cost

or in your case you buy all separate locks and now have to pay a locksmith to rekey them all to use the same key and pay him $100+ to do it

if you ever want to see just how secure these kind of consumer grade locks are, check out the lockpicking lawyer on youtube... you'll never worry about the locks again as you'll see just how easy they are to pick.

Kwikset Smartkey picked and gutted - Lock Picking Lawyer

But more importantly, here is a vid from him showing how to make those same type of locks MUCH harder to pick

Pickproof your kwikset smartkey locks for less than $1

If exchanging them doesn't work, go to a local locksmith and they will do it. I just put a new deadbolt on one of my doors and they charged me $10 to rekey it.

Must be a store specific policy. Mine will do it as long as you have proof of receipt. I've ordered locks online from home Depot and then taken then to the store to be re-keyed for free
