door bell question for the technically challenged

I am 75 and not very mobile. My wife and I have 3 dogs that go crazy with barking with a door knock or door bell ring. Trying to open the door just a crack is impossible and we have to go out through the garage to see who it is.
I am considering the acquisition of a smart/video doorbell that is hard wired over the existing door bell. I have a great nephew who is an electrician who can install it for me.
Let's assume I do all of this and someone comes to the door and uses the video door bell, how does the video get sent to me so we can talk to them or see them? Phone or computer? How would it work if they just knocked? Also for those who have this what brand/model would you suggest? Thanks for any information.

With mine, the video is sent to both my phone and my iPad. You can get it sent to anything that that you care to download the app to. I have a video doorbell called Euphy, but there are several brands. Mine uses existing wiring and chimes to power the doorbell…basically a direct replacement for your existing doorbell button.
I have to say, the intercom function doesn’t work too well to talk, because there is quite a delay. However, the video doorbell is the single most useful thing that I have bought for my house.
ETA: the doorbell broadcasts to your device (s) wheather anyone rings the doorbell or not..it senses motion.

Ring is the popular brand. There are smart locks compatible with the camera that are capable of opening and closing the deadbolt if that is something you are interested. The install is extremely easy. Your chime may need a booster to operate with the doorbell camera, which I know came with my Ring. Ring (and I'm assuming other door cameras) off a wireless chime powered by your outlets.
If your nephew is capable of looking that up for you, consider that. If not, Best Buy or any most electronics stores can help you.

quote:you get a notification from the app...in my case, it is a Ring app and I have a Ring doorbell...you just need to make sure your doorbell is close enough to connect to your wifi system.

This will be for Ring but may apply to others:
I forgot to mention, but you are capable of adjusting the sensitivity of the motion sensor, along with setting boundaries that it will/will not consider for motion. A notification goes to your phone with a screenshot of what triggered the camera, and if you click it before around 1 minute, it will take you to a live feed of the camera. This is all enabled via WiFi.
There is a microphone on/off and mute on/off button on the video if it's a live feed and the microphones are generally good enough. Ending the interaction is simple.
I bought a separate yearly service that saves my recordings to Ring, not sure for how long, but I have used them a few times for instances that have happened in our neighborhood. Funny instance was our neighbor's child riding his scooter into my car. No damage to my car and we all shared laughs.

We have had a Nest (now google owned) doorbell and it's been fine. I can set it to notify me on the phone (or ipad if you have one) whenever it sees anything. You can set it for any motion, just people, packages (placed and removed), any sound, and obviously it pings you when someone rings the doorbell. You can talk through it as well to ask someone what the hell they want, hear their dumb answer, and tell them to go away.

TAPO is another option. You can hardwire or use battery. App is super simple and the doorbell chime can be placed anywhere in your home. They have great deals on their website.
