Don’t do cypress. Unless you’re doing old growth cypress. In which case you’re too rich to be doing your own shutters.

(New cypress is very prone to rot)

Really, cedar is the answer.

What style are you looking for?

Most builders are using pre primed redwood these days. That is if you are painting them. For a non operable shutter that is stained I would just use a cedar fence board. Cheap and should last for years.

Spanish cedar is a far better choice than cypress.

I built mine from cedar 1x material and decorative gate hardware, finished with several coats of spar varnish.

Sorry, will be using cedar not cypress. Any articles on styles for layout?

This in a nutshell. Also, the newer cypress will cup badly when exposed to heat. I made some replacement shutters for an apartment building in the French Quarter many years ago and used newer cypress. I primed and painted them that dark green that is so popular with functioning shutters and hung them. Within a couple months I had to remake most of them due to cupping and used Spanish Cedar the second time with absolutely no issues-------other than cost of materials.

Pretty sure if you google "building shutters" you will get tons of ideas on different styles.

An easy good looking one is board and batten with tongue and groove cedar. Then bevel all the edges and use Spanish cedar for the battens.

I would also recommend gluing everything.

if you are painting them and doing a basic board and batten don't use cypress or cedar. go to a lumberyard and get either duraprime or design pine. you'll save yourself about 4 times the money and they will hold up better.
