Dallis grass

Moved in December. Now this
My searching tells me the most likely methods are
1. Scorched earth (glyphosphate)
2. MSMA (maybe)
I have msm turf. Is that the same as MSMA?

MSM is not MSMA
What Grass type do you have?

No they are not the same herbicide. What type of lawn grass do you have? Post a picture of what you are dealing with.

Not OP but I have this in my yard. Centipede grass but it's pretty non-existent in that area after clearing out a truckload of weeds with the cocktail you recommended.

If it's only a few I like to dig them up and put down a mix of sand and potting soil.

Looks like crabgrass but let’s see what others think. Did you use pre-emergent herbicide? If crabgrass you can spray it with sethoxydim to kill it since you have a centipede lawn.
Have you fertilized yet? If not should probably do so to start pushing grass growth.
With the large amount of dead grass areas you seem to have perhaps you should also consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide to keep summer weeds at bay while the centipede fills in - I’m a little concerned you may see a re-emergence of weeds in those “bare” areas.
Anyway, let ronk and some other weigh in on the weed ID and their recommendations.

Won't fricking work. Now what you can do is
1) spot spray MSMA- guarantee kill
2.) Celsius+Revolver slow kill
3.) Glysophate disaster

I applied the winter weed cocktail (Fertilome weed free zone, atrazine, spreader sticker) 3/13 and then spot sprayed it on 4/1.
No fertilization yet. My neighbor told me I could use his Scott's Bonus S but ronk said it was not great for centipede and I've read similar things on other sites. Haven't figured out what fertilizer but was looking at the Ferti-lome centipede lawn fertilizer.
I feel like I need to add some soil like b-rab said before adding fertilizer but I know nothing

Sorry for the slow reply. I've got St. Augustine. I'm intrigued by the MSMA solution. I've got a ton of Dallis.

MSMA will kill St Aug. Celsius+Revolver+Sedgehammer is Total Tribute. It works on Dallisgrass but it too will kill St Aug. If you have a lot of spots and don't fill like dig them up I would use glyphosate concentrate because you will be able to drop a piece of sod a few days after application without having to worry about chemical damage.

The Fertilome 15-0-15 is a good fertilizer for centipede - apply 3 1/3 pounds per 1000 sq ft. Follow up with a second application in mid-June/July.
If indeed that is crabgrass those clumps by the street/driveway you could remove my hand or even spot spray with glyphosate (“Roundup”), any clumps mixed in with living centipede, again if crabgrass, can be sprayed with the sethoxydim to kill the crabgrass without harming the centipede.
Unless you had some winter kill of centipede, you had a significant amount of winter weeds you killed with the cocktail mix, just looking at the “bare areas”. Your goal should be to boost the growth of the centipede to fill in those areas as quickly as possible. Centipede grows slow so you need patience, but my centipede lawn is sending out new runners like crazy right now. I fertilized it about a week ago.
If you need to fill in low spots with soil/sand, you can can do that at anytime this summer it’s convenient for you - you need not do that before you fertilize the lawn. In fact the best time to fill low spots is when grass is actively growing and filling in areas.

Thanks.
I had a ridiculous jungle of weeds before using the cocktail mix. I'm super happy with how that worked.
Just ordered the 15-0-15 and I'll try removing them by hand I don't have that much to get rid of.

Good - and going forward plan on getting on a fall (Sep/Oct) and late winter/early spring (Feb) pre-emergent herbicide program. It’s a game changer - you won’t eliminate all weeds but you’ll be amazed with the reduction of weeds you need to control beginning next spring

MSMA is the bomb. But they don't sell it anymore right?

Looks to me like you have dalliagrass too in your yard.
To the OP: I’ve tried every method to remove dallisgrass. Everyone is right on every method mentioned. I finally got the urge to try the “glove method” with roundup this year, and I think it’s my favorite so far. It just took way too much effort and my back was aching by the time I finished.

What is the "glove method"?
Posted on 4/22/20 at 8:40 am to Auburntiger
Put on a nitrile glove. Dip hand in straight Roundup. Rub/touch your hands on ONLY the dallis leaves that way you don’t kill any desirable gras.

Interesting.....is the "glove method" more effective than Dan Gill's suggested method?
quote:
2) You can spray individual dallisgrass plants with glyphosate (Killzall, Roundup, Kleenup and other brands). This will kill the St. Augustine as well, so do your best to focus the application just to the dallisgrass. This will kill individual plants. The lawn will grow back into small dead spots, but if you have to kill an area of these weeds, you should considerer removing the dead weeds and laying sod over the area. This will quickly heal the damage. An area that stays bare of grass for an extended period is an invitation to weeds.

Either method should be equally effective - just chose the method that’s most convenient for you.

How do y’all measure the pounds per sq ft? You actually put it on a scale?
