Ok ignore my terrible math on the previous page

Here are some 'not to scale' drawings of the 2 boxes. I think everything on here is pretty accurate number-wise even if the pics aren't exactly to scale.

Below is how they'll stack and rough idea how the boards will run.

- I'll join the boxes in the back and screw them to the porch
- top box boards will run horizontal
- bottom box boards will run horizontal with 45 degree turn where the top box ends to provide a step down
- 4 deck lights on top step fascia and 1 light on the side
- 4 deck lights on the bottom step

Looks about right. I would still use concrete blocks to support the base at the porch area. The weight of all the wood on the 4x4’s would be too much to just hang. Still screw in to the 4x4’s, but you need something contacting ground to support all of that weight on the porch side.

Stringers would be much cheaper obviously, but the 2’ step down in the corner definitely gives it a more “custom look”

Ok will do on the concrete supports. I only need about 6" so I assume they make various heights or should I plan to dig out the area?

Would you recommend screwing or shooting a couple nails into the patio concrete to secure the front of it?

I think this will be a nice area for people to sit because it's shaded most of the day and there's a great view.

The expanded deck feels more purposeful than the existing steps.

Buy some of these at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Or just regular blocks/cheap pavers for support in the middle of the lower box. Might have to scrape out some dirt to bury them a few inches to level it.

Barring a hurricane/tornado, it’s not going anywhere. The weight of two boxes plus trex is a lot more than you can imagine

Also, consider a pack of non wood shims to level the patio part. Gives a little space between patio and wood contact, for drainage and to level (patio is likely sloped for drainage). See link.

I was going to make some shims from composite scraps.

I was going to shim between the porch and the box too so that area can breathe.

I'll pick up the pavers and play with them.
