Closet Idea For New Home

Met with a custom cabinet company that also priced building us a custom closet system. Price came in around $5000 and while the cabinets are solid wood the closet system would be made from mdf/furniture board. I’m not sold on that. The closet isn’t that big of deal to me but I’d like something besides wire shelving, especially in a custom home (home is simple so don’t think ultra high end).
My thoughts are to build 30” walls perpendicular from the closet walls and block them heavily. Then hang rods from the walls. Thus giving it the look as if the closet rods and hanging areas are built into the walls. Anybody see why this is a bad idea or wouldn’t work? Obviously have to get the widths you want correct and it’d be permanent.
Thoughts?

Easyclosets.com
Custom layouts, color options, easy install & assembly. Not as expensive as Cali Closets or others. Going on 10 yrs with ours with zero problems or regrets. It’s still mdf but the veneers are top quality.

Well, you will lose a bit of closet space by putting in 4” thick walls. Every inch counts. Plus, it surely costs more to build a wall and finish it than using sheet goods.
I made my closet from plywood and trimmed with poplar and painted. If you don’t like MDF, why not plywood for the dividers and shelves?
As a former wire shelf owner, don’t do it.

MDF is fine for cheaper homes which is what we used on ours. We had to upgrade because our original wire shelving was never properly installed into studs and collapsed. We bought a cheap closet maid closet system and in hindsight I should've just bought real wood but it cost maybe a total of $300 for our small master closet. It included shelving and future options to install some of their shelving system attachments which includes shoe racks, drawers, cabinet door, etc.
Only downside is that the shelving above the closet racks look a little flimsy because of the MDF. it's definitely a value purchase.
