AC company is suggesting that I have a soft start installed on my ac to help the compressor. I am not having any issues right now, but they are telling me that it will help extend the life of the compressor. I think its BS, anyone know if they work or are worth the money.

Ive only heard of hard start kits. It's basically an additional capacitor that boost the start and run of the compressor.

This is usually installed if you are having trouble with the compressor starting.

However, I've heard that manufacturers have started installing them at the factory too, on some units.

Wouldn't hurt anything. How much are they wanting to charge you?

My new carrier units are less than a year old but have been through several power flucs and one of them is already making weird sounds. If you have an option to put something in-line to protect them, you should do it.

I think the soft start is on the air handler blower motor. Some systems allow the compressor to completely unload pressure when starting but IDK if that can be added after a condenser is installed?

It looks like it's an electronic circuit that switches in the contactor/real gradually...
----

Soft starters lower energy use and reduce wear and tear on motors and connected mechanical equipment. Stellar SR22 and WEG SSW05 series compact solid-state soft starters use thyristors for controlled reduced voltage motor starting and stopping. These units then switch to internal contacts for efficient running at the rated speed.

If I'm remembering correctly, an AC motor draws up to to 6-7 times its normal running current for a few seconds. The normal inertia required to move a static motor is hard on a system. Mechanically speaking, it is like flooring your gas pedal every time the light turns green.

I have a Bosch table saw has a soft start. My previous saw would dim the lights in my garage when it started, the Bosch does not.

Soft starts definitely have merit, and are not snake oil. Whether you'll see a ROI depends on what the installation cost is and how long it will keep you from replacing your entire HVAC system.

Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) have surpassed soft starts to accomplish the same thing to increase longevity & efficiency. In your existing set up. A VFD probably is not feasible. There is merit to both systems economically & mechanically based on initial installation cost.

I installed one on my camper, reduced amp draw on startup, and allows you to run ac on 1600watt inverter.

They are made for home ac as well.

At only $300 why don’t more come with it or come as an option at install?
