I have this area in our main living area and Id like to have a bar built in with cabinets, countertop and wine cooler.

I have been searching around images the past few days looking for ideas on what all to include. Id like to build this myself but I honestly just do not have the time, and probably not the skills.

I know my wife wants a wine cooler and some wine storage and I would love a ice maker if possible. id get rid of that converted bar we have and just store everything in cabinets.

Anyone have a area like that who could give some recomendations before I start searching for someone to come over for a estimate? Id love a sink there but I am not sure how difficult that will be since there is no water available on that wall.

The wall space is a little over 8 foot long to the corner where those light switches are and about 29" deep to that first turn at the thermostat.

Thanks for any recs...

getting water there overhead isn’t that big a deal but if there’s no drain that is a big deal. We have a huge L shaped built in bar with sink and drain with a nice cypress bar top…that we never use

Man dont tell me that.

I dont have water behind that wall or anything. We are also on a slab so I think getting a drain there is going to be tough. It is connected to our kitchen so we are close to a sink which may just have the be the deal.

Id love to see a picture of what you have. Trying to gather ideas.....

Here's what we have in our kitchen. Currently reorganizing to make it look better. Dimensions are roughly 25.5" x 71" x 8.5'

We use it for storing coffee mugs, candles, specialty alcohol glasses, and other miscellaneous stuff. A handful of small kitchen appliances and tools (pizza stones, crock pots and rice cooker.

Eventually I would like to do away with the coffee machine and put it on something similar to what you have, but with some hanging storage for mugs. Add ice maker and backsplash to this area.

I keep editing my post as I go, but I should mention we got this done as part of an entire kitchen remodel. There was nothing here but a weird kitchen peninsula and we decided to build this along the wall. Quartzite countertops match the rest of the kitchen. Had them cut out a hole for the coffee machine so plug underneath with the dual zone wine/drink fridge.

When we remodeled our last kitchen we had room and put a bar on one side with cabinets, ice maker and a sink. The cabinets were full and the ice maker was used daily, especially since it was already in the kitchen. The sink was never ever used. Being so near the kitchen we just always used the main sink.

I think that is similar to what we are thinking. A 8' long cabinet with a wine cooler for sure. I can see us having some wine bottle storage up top as well as cabinets with glass doors. Since I will need to eliminate this old bar, I will have to put all my alcohol in there or on the counter tops.

Very similar to what you did. I was thinking maybe some wine glass storage from my wife. Maybe hanging from under the upper cabinets. Our ceilings are 9'-10" so our kitchen cabinets do not go all the way to the ceiling. I am going to try and match the bar with the kitchen since they are directly connected

And I have to say, you have a lot going on with that counter top right there. LOL. Looks like some of my spaces.

Thanks for the pic, I believe that is the direction we will go.

If you want specifically a bar countertop, make the top of the cabinet smaller so you can have something to store glasses upside down.

Man, I wouldn’t do that. I have several friends that built this kind of thing at various stages in life and none of them ever use that shite. You spend a hell of a lot of time keeping it clean, too. Most people use it one time per year…when they are opening Christmas presents.

wut? maybe we're degenerate drinkers, but we routinely have friends over once or twice a week and the bar is rocking. its next to the pool table and probably the most utilized space in the house.

still a work-in-progress, but we have a faucet, countertop icemaker, lots of storage for drinks and glasses and i'm about to put in a wine-glass rack underneath. we are still on the fence about getting a hanging rack for glasses that would hang down over the bar where the bar stools are. i don't think we need it and the space is small so i think it would feel more cluttered.

I should've clarified that I'm talking about your bar vs. what my bar area looks like. If I were to model your bar area after mine, I would just make the top cabinets smaller to have room to put the alcohol behind. Gives you room to hang stemmed glasses like this:

As mentioned above, you don't really want/need a sink. It's not worth the extra cost/plumbing and you will likely just use the kitchen sink nearby.

i do agree with this. ours came with a sink already but the kitchen sink is literally on the other side of the wall and we're bringing stuff to the dishwasher anyway so there's almost no point at all to the sink in the bar unless you just need to quickly rinse something off or add water to the blender.

When we moved in to our home, it had an L shaped bar setup, but it was all very outdated. I sold the bar and updated the built-in area.

Man that is so close to what I want. Did you buy a kit or have someone build it in custom?

That is an awesome space right there. And I agree that we will use this often. We entertain people a good bit, and like you, must be degenerate drinkers.

I have a very nice outside area near my pool that we use a lot. I don’t think this will be wasted money to upgrade this old cabinet to a built-in system. I think you guys are correct, skipping the sink might be better for us. No water or drain there and my kitchen sink is right behind that area. I’d love to have an icemaker but with no drain, I’m sure that is not possible.

I had someone come and do the cabinets and countertop. All I did was install the water faucet, tile the backsplash and install the fridge.

As far as the sink goes, I do enjoy having it right there. However, I never would have gone through the trouble of plumbing one in if it wasn't already there when we bought the place. Not a necessity IMO

this i do wish we had; theres no room behind the bar without cutting the existing shelves and they're too nice to do that.

it would be great to store bourbon ice balls and drink mixers for convenience but again, the kitchen fridge is like 7 steps away so it doesn't make that much sense.

Yea, that may be a option for us. We could use it outback as well. I have been eyeing one for a few months.

We have one of those between the dining and kitchen across from the walking pantry. Use it as coffee and bar area. I am amazed at how much we use the space. I wish mine were a couple feet wider to add ice but we don’t want to give up the fridge underneath. We have water and drainage there already fir the bar sink
