BR Lumber Sources for First Time Lathe Project & Question re: Tupelo

Looking to do my first lathe project (bowls). Most of the lumber I'm seeing on Craigslist is cypress and expensive (~$4 for board foot). Any idea where to source lumber in BR that's good for a first timer (e.g. walnut, hickory, etc.).
Also, know where to source tupelo. Would that be a decent wood for a first time project? Haven't found much about it online.

Not sure about lathe turning and Tupelo. I know it’s a favorite among highly decorative detail carvers (like duck decoys) because it is a fine grained wood.....kind of like the opposite of oak. Smooth, little visible graining, light colored, fairly soft.

Brazos in Denham, as mentioned. You could also check Service Lumber in BR.
Wherever you end up, be prepared for some sticker shock if you're looking for hardwood and think $4/bf is expensive. Walnut is a great wood for a beginner, very easy to work and pretty readily available. Last time I bought some, it was close to $8/bf.

Thanks. Went to Brazos today. They only have boards. They used to carry more before the 2016 flood but no longer do. Bought some birch that I'll glue together. Still on the hunt for whole log pieces. Thanks for the recommendations.

A good way to find wood logs is to be scavenger. Look at places where the trees are being cleared off some land or for a downed tree somewhere. I got/found some sycamore years ago that I turned on the lathe to make a plant stand and a few other things.
IMO.... I would not attempt turning a bowl for your first project or the second. Set up a piece of wood and just practice some. Maybe make a candle holder or a rolling pin.
I ended up making some "specially" shaped tools using the steel from old files. I found the standard tools, just won't make narrow or very narrow cuts.

Brazos but they have been weird lately with orders and pick ups.
Service usually only has maple, cherry, walnut.
Acadian Cypress in Ponchatoula has a good selection and it’s easy to pick through their stacks.
Riverside lumber in New Orleans is also a good spot.

how far are you willing to drive? Cajun Cypress in Baker used to have a good selection. I haven't been there in a while. If you really feel like driving, Jones & Jones in Innis (just over an hour from baton rouge) might be an option for cypress and pine products.
