Sunday, I mowed my lawn (St. Augustine and Centipede) and used a garden sprayer to spray for web worms since I noticed there were a few little white moths in the grass along with a few small yellowing patches. As I sprayed the grass, there were hundreds of little black bugs jumping out where the stream landed. About size of a black eyed pea? Think they might have small red stripes. I will try to add pictures of the little guys later.
Thoughts? Thanks!

Yup. That's the one. I saw hundreds. Guessing I have a problem. I will check to see if my spraying from Sunday had any effect, and if not, hit them again between rain storms. Them and web worms. Sheeesh.

I don’t think they hurt anything.

In large numbers they will absolutely kill centipede and zoysia lawns.

Thanks. Seems that the interwebs indicated that they (spittlebugs)could damage lawns. I do seem to have seen a large quantity of the buggers . . .
Used Spectracide Triazicide from Home Depot. Main ingredient listed is Gamma-Cyhalothrin. Lists sod web worms as one of the things it controls, and that was my main objective, then saw hundreds of spittlebugs jumping as I sprayed . . .

Growing up, my dad's lawn was centipede and I mowed it weekly for years. Those were everywhere, all over my legs and whatnot. Never sprayed for them, they never hurt the lawn. That's just my personal experience.

I don’t believe it. Folks carpet bombing their whole yards with insecticide for things like this are causing more problems than they’re solving. Any extension agent will agree.

If that’s me a spittlebug then it can hurt zoysia. It leaves a spit-like residue in the grass.
