Looking to finally tackle my backyard grass problem. Half of it is covered by trees and shade to the point where it's even difficult for weeds to grow. Is there a grass seed worth attempting to grow?

You can clearly tell where sunlight reaches through when the trees have their leaves.

I called Clegg's and they recommended I go with river silt instead of top soil. Would also like to know thoughts on this as well.

You need to remove a couple trees. Bermuda/Zoysia is the only warm season seed. You won't be able to grow either there. If you don't want to remove a couple trees then mondo grass is probably your only bet. Geo zoysia may be able to grow there but you have to sod it and it won't be cheap.
