Unfortunately we bought a house with a beautifully landscaped backyard and pool, but it is an absolute nightmare to keep the pool clear and clean with all the debris that is consistently falling into it year round. For the big items, we have a pecan tree, two white oaks, one live oak, 8 crepe myrtles, two olive trees, and lots of banana trees. It is always something depending on the time of the year; we have about 3-4 weeks out of the entire year nothing is falling & I’m done. We have been in this house 6 years and have a toddler; it’s just too difficult to maintain & a giant pain in the butt. This is a relatively small yard of maybe .10 of an acre, so everything ends up in the pool and it’s constantly causing PH issues. There’s nothing we can do about the oaks or pecan tree & the banana trees are no issue. I’m thinking if we get rid of the very mature beautiful crepe myrtles that surround the pool, it’ll be a relief. What should we plant in its place that would be beautiful and not shed its leaves or flowers? We live in Lafayette LA for reference & I’m a pretty poor landscaper (we are way in our heads with the landscaping, so something easy to maintain). We are considering citrus trees, but I’m open to opinions and suggestions! Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post

Two things...buy you a solar powered pool skimmer. I bought an Ariel earlier this year and it does a heck of a job keeping the pool clean. Secondly, remove those crepe myrtles as soon as possible as they are the devil when it comes to pools. You can plant holly trees or some type of conifer depending on the look your going for.

We bought a dolphin premier pool robot last year and it has helped tremendously! Sadly I know we will have to cut down the crepe myrtles. I hate to do it because they are so mature and beautiful, but you’re right

Remove remove crape myrtles. Plant evergreens. I like japanese or austrian black pines, but I think you're a little far south for those to survive.

Your pool must be a total shite show. Cut the crape myrtles or continue to be miserable.

Whoever planted those crepes in your backyard deserves a special place in hell. That comment bay be a little excessive. Crepes are really nice trees but they are an absolute no-go around a pool. I really want some in my backyard but also have a pool.

Why can’t you get rid of pecan tree? They’re terrible in a small yard or close to a house when they get older.Limbs break easily the bigger they are.

Savannah Hollies are nice trees, not too messy.

My $.02. It’s not the species of tree. It’s the value of shade. Have a buddy that bought a house with a huge oak and a huge pecan over the pool. They were talking about cutting them down but I told them they’d be in the sun at the hottest part of the day if they cut them down. Thin them out, but it’s a toss up want to deal with the mess in the pool or deal with baking your arse off in the sun. I’ll always opt for the shade but the work wears you down over time.
