i am having a problem; the remote no longer turns the gas on/off or raises/lowers the flame.

background:
- just lit pilot last week, seems fine
- i can manually turn the knob to "ON", "OFF" or "PILOT" and that works just fine.
- replaced the remote battery
- replaced the 4 AAs in the receiver box
- reset the receiver and repaired remote which seemed to work just fine
- when i press the remote, the receiver box beeps but nothing else.
- fireplace knob is in the ON position (per manual)
- i *think* i can hear a slight noise right after pressing the remote coming from the back of the firebox.

so at this point, i'm probably going to need to call in someone but my YT search didn't come up with anything...it "feels" like the doohickey the receiever controls that makes the fire go up or down may have some debris or needs some WD40 or something..i dont know where to begin.

anyone had a similar experience? fireplace is of unknown vintage..probably 20 or 30 years old at least; we just bought the house and it was working the first year we were here until i killed the pilot back in the spring.

tl;dr i can turn the knob in the fireplace manually, remote and receiever both have fresh batteries and paired, will not turn the fire on or off.

The receiver for the remote is failure prone. I've replaced several for people over the years, even had a brand-new one fail out of the box. The local supply shop said it must have been an installation issue but then they couldn't make it work either. Put in another new one and it's been working fine but told my friend to keep a spare handy. The remotes themselves go bad too but not as often and sometimes even the manifold holding the gas solenoid goes bad. I have a small box full of spare parts and I don't even own one of these systems... Unfortunately there isn't much that's reasonably serviceable for the end user outside of just replacing the major components, think the German company that makes a lot these systems just doesn't make parts easily available here.

ok, i'm learning..

so it seems the system has 3 parts:
- remote
- battery-operated receiver
- DC servo motor/solenoid valve

you are saying its less likely an issue w/ the servo/solenoid valve here and more likely the receiever itself isn't 'energizing' it properly to open & close?

Bookmarked. Tried ours last week and nothing. Haven't gone through all the batteries yet as it's not cold enough to be super worried yet.

Clames...i pulled all the fire logs out (GROSS, i need to toss them) and fiddled a bit more; i told you i could 'hear' something happening in the back..

well i guess it was just stuck..because i kept messing with it (just using the receiever and not remote) and suddenly the knob moved slightly. i did a couple more off/on moves w/ the control box and finally it started working.

i'm not sure if that can be serviced or cleaned, but it definitely is making a bit more noise to turn the knob but it seems to be working now so we'll see for how long.

now i'm off to find some better fire logs online...i'm not cleaning these..they're so gross and black and i can't believe i hadnt noticed it before.

i also adjusted the pilot positioning so it wasn't burning against the metal and scraped some carbon off so there's no yellow at the tip of the flame now...

tell me your model #; i have spent 2 days on this so of course i'm an 'expert' now but i might be able to keep you from wasting time on useless YT videos that show how to pair the remote and replace the batteries.

I'll get back with you. It won't be an issue until the one who must be obeyed gets a little chilly.

My dog chewed my remote up so I just made my own from a dual remote DT relay. A lot of these old things can’t be found anymore.

As long as it's just dirt/dust and nothing was melted then you can clean them pretty easily. Silicone oil helps too. If you are going to replace the logs then you may as well clean everything out and check out everything. I don't know how fancy your setup is but a few bags of the lava rock nuggets is relatively cheap (unless yours uses the glass nuggets and that stuff isn't so cheap). The burner itself gets clogged with ash and deposits, worth cleaning too. I rebuilt two systems last year, new logs, lava rocks, cinder "fluff" (no idea what it's actually called but it's basically fiberglass nuggets with glitter mixed in), cleaned the burner, replaced thermopile probes/wires, bent/flared new copper gas lines, even made new sheet metal shields for the reciever and controls. Basically people don't do any maintenance on these things for years, 20+ years in one case, until they simply stop working.

yes, we are going w/ black fireplace cannonballs; i know i know..you are supposed to go w/ the logs you are rated for but this is a vented real fyre 46 propane so swapping the logs out should be fine; i did buy a heavy duty mesh ember retainer so we can put the balls out; going w/ a variety pack (5" to 2") black.

something like this but sitting on the grate, not on the ground.

also to your point; i'm replacing the old lava rocks with gold glass; i think it will look more modern with the new ball logs.

yes its getting a good cleanin' and i'm leaving the wool/insulation fluff alone; thats concentrated in the front trapezoid between the ignitor arm and the knob control arm.

i figure at worst the fireplace will perform better with a good scrubbing and assessing all the stuff. the carbon was AWFUL. i still have it all over my hands even after scrubbing with scotch pads.

gloves for me on thursday!

Well, if you're a proper baw you'll have at least 1, if not several, of the larger bottles of Hoppe's No. 9 and it's an excellent carbon remover. I used to use it to clean the blades and tubines on turbochargers, just melts the crud right off.

If I wasn't a proper baw and just ordered it after reading what you posted nobody would ever know
