I painted my cabinets..I went to Helm paint and they suggested a cabinet paint that was like iron. I can't remember the name of the paint but it was expensive. Call them and see what they say...

We painted our maple cabinets a few years ago. So far so good on them. They were just a stained blonde maple cabinet.
We used general finishes milk paint. I used a brush and rollers on the cabinet faces and HVLP sprayer on the cabinet doors. Then put a general finishes poly over that.
For the cleaning we used TSP powder from Lowe’s, the denatured alcohol and scouring pads. Wiped down after the scouting pads.
It sounds like a lot but it really wasn’t bad.

I lightly sand and use the Emerald Urethane SW line. Best water based paint for cabinets I have used.

you certain its formica and not just a cheap decal like coating over press board?
if its formica sand it and paint it and your good
if its a sticker then paint will peel the sticker off and wrinkle the finish when it dries. if you sand through to the press board it will look like painted cardboard when its done.
if it were me i would leave it alone and do nothing since you already plan to gut the kitchen in near future any way.
if you feel the need to please the wife until then, you can wipe everything down good to remove grease and dirt then use a roller and paint it as-is or spray paint it with very light coats so it doesnt wrinkle the finish. that will give you a decent result and look nice until you rip everything out and remodel.

So no sanding? There was a blog about somebody doing this paint with no sanding and it looks like you had same experience.
I assume it’s holding up good since you made no comment otherwise.

Not sure house was built in 70’s and I don’t think it’s been remodel since then .. I don’t know what was used back then I just assume it’s formica. And no wife I’m doing it for myself.
