We grew up calling this "cane reed", but I finally got around to finding its formal name (river cane bamboo, Arundinaria gigantea). It's fairly common in south La, with stands of it growing in SE Baton Rouge.

Short of trespassing to dig some up, is there somewhere I can buy some shoots?

You don’t have to dig. Just find some fresh reed and bury it. Roots and shoots will erupt at each reed nodule. Same way sugarcane is propagated.

yes just stop and walk over and yank some up if it’s a roadside, doubt anyone will care. I liberate native ditch plants all the time, irises, pickerel weed, spider lily, cattails etc.

they all deserve to be planted and showcased

We used to wrap bonfires with cane reeds, great pooping sound when they burn and the segments explode.

Just cut some with a machete. Lay it in a trench and bury.

ETA: come back here in two years when you need to know hot to control it!
