By all accounts they are quiet and wonderful. Is it a necessity to install the brackets? Can they just sit in the window like a traditional window unit?

It's quieter than a regular window unit but not as quiet as a LG inverter window unit or a mini split.
Is it a necessity to install the brackets?
Yes. You have to assemble the frame thingy and brackets. It's pretty easy though.
Costco has the 12k btu on sale really cheap right now and will have the 8kbtu on sale starting the 5th.

Yes, install them. The condenser side of the unit is much heavier so it needs support.

Last week saw Home Depot Laplace instore pricing at $400 for the 12 btu and $300 for the 8. When I bought my 8 a year ago, HD was $300 which was $50 less than online sellers. These units sip Electricity - sweet for camps.
Could you post up the Costco numbers...

The one from Home Depot is a different model than the one at Costco. It looks like the Home Depot one has more bells and whistles.
Anybody know the difference in the two models?

Smoking deal. Great gift/contribution to a buddy with a camp.

Old Man,
Just checked my 8000 btu remote control against the Costco 12 unit remote.
Both remotes have same buttons and appear identical. I can't help as to features that might differ. By the way, the remotes are advanced compared to other window unit remotes.
My Midea units have Bluetooth (I don't use it - I'm old too.); that could be the diff between HD and Costco units.
Lots of YouTube installation vids - practical & straight forward installs.
