Anyone have any experience with the Rheem Marathon Plastic tank hot water heaters? i didnt know these existed until searching for a new water heater. they look to be about double the cost, but they also come with a lifetime warranty. i also have not seen many pro/con discussions. wondering if any baws here have experience with them.

i currently have an AO smith 40 gal that sprung a leak around the inlet nipple last year and i fixed that myself. now it seems the leak is coming from the bottom of the tank somewhere. i vacuumed the drain pan and can see water seeping back into the pan from below the tank. i didnt replace the anode when i replaced the inlet nipple/dip tube which is probably why its leaking now.

seems like a plastic tank would remove at least one fail point.

I'm on a well with a softener.

Old anode rods are undefeated in conference play.

agree, that's why I'm contemplating making the move to the plastic tank. i've just learned that softened well water is even harder on anode rods than city water is. if i go back with a metal tank then id have to add routine inspection of the anode.

I installed two 60-gallon 208V for a commercial client years ago and as far as I know they are still working. These were for a small restaurant and they were burning out conventional 50-gallon units, high usage combined with really bad downtown Shreveport water.

I need to look into that for my restaurant. I might get 4 or 5 years out of one with this bayou water. Had the last two cut open and they were wrecked inside

from what i see on the reviews on HD the main issue is the inlet nipple leaking from a mfg defect. I'm hoping they fixed that issue.

Buy one from a supply house and not a big box store.

I'll look into that

are supply houses supposed to have better quality for some reason?

Yes, and much better customer service if you ever need. Parts are more readily available as well. You may spend $75 more but it is worth it
